Drinking olive oil: a health and beauty elixir or celebrity fad in a shot glass?

Hazel Flight, Edge Hill University

In the ever-changing world of wellness trends and celebrity endorsed health fads there is a new trend on the scene: daily olive oil shots.

Celebrities such as Kourtney Kardashian, Beyonce, Gwyneth Paltrow and Jennifer Lopez all extol the virtues of swigging extra virgin as well as slathering it on their skin, crediting olive oil for their glowing complexions.

Lopez even based her JLo Beauty brand around the kitchen staple, claiming that her age-defying looks were not the result of botox or surgery but the family beauty secret: moisturising with olive oil.

And she’s in good company. Hollywood star Goldie Hawn reportedly drinks olive oil before bed and uses it topically as a moisturiser, while beauty icon Sophia Loren really goes to town by bathing in the stuff.

While these celebrities swear by the skin beautifying properties of olive oil, some skin types should give it a swerve. Those prone to acne or eczema, for example, might find the olive oil exacerbates their problems. Some dermatologists warn against using it as skin care altogether – bad news for JLo.

Thanks largely to celebrity promotion, drinking olive oil has now become a worldwide TikTok sensation. Viral videos show influencers tossing back shots of cult olive oil brands, and proclaiming a wide range of health benefits from improving digestion to clearing up acne.

Celebrity and influencers are sold on liquid gold but what about the rest of us? Can drinking olive oil really work on miracles for our health?

The benefits of olive oil

There’s no doubt that olive oil is full of good stuff. It’s high in polyphenols and antioxidants, which have protective qualities for the body’s tissues. It’s also a rich source of essential fatty acids, including oleic acid, which is known for lowering cholesterol so reducing the chances of heart disease.

Research has found that the inclusion of olive oil in the diet shows encouraging effects in a variety of inflammatory and medical diseases and can support weight management if used correctly.

Replacing butter, margarine, mayonnaise and dairy fat with olive oil has been linked to a lower risk of mortality. There’s also evidence to suggest that the protective compounds in olive oil may help guard against cancer, dementia and support the liver and kidneys.

But none of this is new information to health professionals. The health benefits of extra virgin olive oil are well researched and nutritionists have promoted olive oil as a swap for saturated cooking fat for years.

After all, the Mediterranean diet has been touted as one of the healthiest diets in the world for decades. The diet itself can vary from region to region, but virgin olive oil is a consistent element. It’s used as the main source of cooking fat and included in everything from salad dressings to bread.

Can fat be healthy? Yes and no

Fats are crucial for a balanced diet, aiding in the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins A,D,E,K and enhancing the nutritional value of meals.

However, fat of any kind is also dense in calories and excessive consumption can lead to weight gain. According to the World Health Organization, to prevent unhealthy weight gain, adults should limit their intake of fat to 30% of total energy intake with no more than 10% coming from saturated fats.

Two tablespoons of olive oil – the standard amount in the shots taken by celebrities and social media influencers – contain 28g of fat (238 calories) and 3.8g of saturated fat equating to 19% of the recommended daily intake.

That daily shot of extra virgin, then, might not be the best idea. Adding small amounts of olive oil to meals throughout the day is a more balanced – and appetising – approach to incorporating healthy fats into your diet.

But what about Kourtney Kardashian’s claim that: “It’s recommended to consume extra virgin olive oil in the morning on an empty stomach so the oil can coat your system and neutralize your stomach walls for optimal benefits?”

Some brands have also echoed the idea that consuming olive oil on an empty stomach offers unique health benefits. But no. There’s no scientific evidence to suggest this is true.

For a healthy but more satisfying snack, Kourtney might try including a handful of olives into her daily diet. Olives offer the same rich array of nutrients, including vitamins E, A and K, alongside essential minerals such as iron, calcium, magnesium, potassium and amino acids.

Unlike olive oil, olives have the added benefit of a high fibre content. The combination of fat and fibre enhances feelings of satiety, making olives a nutritious addition to the diet.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. What did you just say?" the celebrity chef asked.

“Ah, Vegemite toast. What’s a Tim Tam? What is it, it sounds like some terrible rash,” he joked.

The presenter told him that it was a chocolate biscuit and got him to try one after finding a tray on the ship.

“This is the moment of truth – this thing I have never had before,” Jamie said before he took a bite out of the popular snack.

“Very, very nice … I will never forget this moment.”

The 48-year-old chef first came to Australia when he was just 24 years old. "I have never seen that": Nat Barr and Shirvo floored by Jamie Oliver's sneaky chicken hack

Celebrity chef and all-round roast chicken wizard Jamie Oliver unleashed a culinary revelation on Sunrise hosts Natalie Barr and Matt Shirvington recently, rendering them momentarily dumbfounded by his quirky approach to chicken cookery.

The Naked Chef himself, a spry 48 years young, graced the Sunrise breakfast program with his presence to unveil his unique chicken-cooking hack. Sporting an apron that read "I'm not a regular chef, I'm a cool chef," Jamie embarked on a culinary adventure like no other.

To achieve chicken nirvana, Jamie began by marinating the poultry and potatoes in an enchanting blend of lemon, herbs and honey (presumably sprinkled with a touch of fairy dust) before revealing the move that floored the two hosts.

In a move that would make Houdini jealous, Jamie wedged those marinated chicken legs into an oven rack, like a magic trick gone deliciously wrong. With the poise of a culinary acrobat, he lowered the rack into a preheated oven, allowing the chicken pieces to dangle over the potatoes below, like a suspenseful scene in a blockbuster movie.

Apparently, the technique is used so that the excess marinade would gracefully drip into the tray, creating an explosion of flavour that would make fireworks blush with envy. In Jamie's own words, "This is giving you the best, most juicy chicken and (it’s) crispy."

Mind. Blown.

And where did Jamie find inspiration for this chicken wizardry? Why, in his travels around the Mediterranean, where rotisseries are as common as sunscreen at the beach. Truly, Jamie Oliver has taken "thinking outside the box" to a whole new level.

Nat Barr and Shirvo appeared utterly mesmerised by Jamie's culinary sorcery. Shirvington exclaimed, "Mind blown," while Barr added, "Wow, I have never seen that!" If they'd had hats, they would've tipped them in reverence.

In fact, the Sunrise hosts, joined by Mark Beretta, gave Jamie a standing ovation at the end of his demonstration – before revealing that Jamie is set to make a triumphant return to the Sydney Opera House in November for one night only, where he will grace the stage for an evening of deep conversations about his career, inspirations, life, love, and what keeps him motivated.

In Jamie's own words: "Every time I visit Australia, it feels like a big old hug – it’s a real home away from home for me, and I'm so excited to be back this year for this event."

So, prepare your questions about good food, good times, and perhaps even chicken-chandelier cooking, and get ready to laugh until your ribs ache. Jamie Oliver is back to steal the culinary spotlight, one chicken leg at a time.

Images: Sunrise

Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver has opened up about his wife’s “deeply scary” experience with long Covid, as the illness remains uncharted territory with fresh data still being uncovered.

Jools Oliver has been fighting the illness for the past two years.

“She’s had bad COVID and long COVID, so she’s been really affected by it, sadly,” Oliver, 47, shared.

“She’s OK, but still not what she wants to be.”

“It’s been two years. She finds it deeply scary.”

Her condition has left doctors stumped, with long Covid affecting 10-20% of people with ongoing Covid symptoms, according to the World Health Organisation.

The popular chef explained they had seen specialist medical professionals but have been unable to cure her symptoms as the condition is still being learnt about.

“We’re all over Harley Street like a rash, but no one really knows anything,” Oliver went on, referring to the street in London, known for being home to a large amount of private medical specialists.

Despite her condition, Oliver says his wife continues to remain positive and keep her spirits up. The couple share five children together and have been married for 22 years.

Oliver's new cookbook is being released on September 1 and, of course, is dedicated to his wife Jools.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Jamie Oliver (@jamieoliver)

Image: Instagram

Emma Watkins fears due to debilitating condition

Emma Watkins has opened about her greatest fears when it comes to starting a family due to a debilitating condition.

The former Yellow Wiggle married partner Oliver Brian in a small afternoon garden party in the gorgeous Longmeadow Estate in the Victorian town of Tyrendarra earlier this month.

She has since opened up about her fears of not being able to become a mum due to her endometriosis.

“Speaking plainly, I just don’t know if I will be able to,” the 32-year-old told The Daily Telegraph.

“After stage four endo, I am pretty realistic in the fact I don’t know what my chances are. If it happens, that would be amazing, if it doesn’t, that is okay too.”

Endometriosis is a disease that affects more than 11 per cent of Australian women and girls where the tissue similar to the lining of the womb grows outside it in other parts of the body.

The debilitating condition which takes at least seven years to diagnose could also impact a woman's fertility.

Check out Emma and Oliver’s wedding photos here.

Images: Instagram

5 amazing health and beauty benefits of olive oil

1. Preventing stroke

One of the ways to reduce your risk of stroke is to add more olive oil to your diet. “There are many studies to support that regular consumption of extra-virgin olive oil can lower risk of stroke,” Dr Shipley says. Research from France found that study participants who used olive oil regularly had a 41 per cent reduced risk of stroke compare to those who never used it.

2. Heart Health

Among the other cardiovascular benefits of olive oil are the effect of their monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs), which can help keep your ticker working well, according to the Heart Foundation. “Another recent study was able to demonstrate that olive oil consumption, specifically the extra-virgin variety, is associated with reduced risks of cardiovascular disease and mortality in individuals at high cardiovascular risk,” Dr Shipley says. However, you only receive EVOO’s benefits when you replace unhealthy oils or butter with it – not when you add it to what you’re already eating.

3. Smooth hair

The benefits of olive oil also extend to beauty hacks. As a natural conditioner, olive oil is nature’s cure for dry hair. Try massaging it directly into parched tips. “Another way you can take advantage of the hydrating nature of olive oil is by adding a few tablespoons of it to your shampoo,” says Larissa Iracheta, director of quality at Deoleo, the parent company of Bertolli and Carapelli olive oils. “This technique will help soften and strengthen your hair.” Olive oil works particularly well for thick, processed, or split hair

4. Better Cholesterol

One of the reasons EVOO is so good for cardiovascular health is because it reduces the cholesterol that clogs arteries. “In a study from the medical journal Circulation, researchers found that participants who consumed a Mediterranean diet enriched with olive oil had better working levels of HDL cholesterol, or ‘the good cholesterol,’ which aids in removing LDL, the ‘bad cholesterol,’ from one’s blood stream,” Dr Shipley says.

5. Improving Acne

One of the daily habits of people who never get acne is following a Mediterranean diet that includes olive oil. Actress Chloe Grace Moretz credits olive oil with getting rid of her acne. “I wash my face with olive oil,” she told Allure. “I swear my skin is so much clearer because of it.” In the same way olive oil can remove oil-based makeup (more on that later), it can help remove the oil from your skin. Plus, some studies have shown olive oil has antibacterial properties, which can help clear up skin infections that can lead to breakouts.

Written by Tina Donvito. How to make Jamie Oliver's bay salt prawn skewers with summer veg

Time to prepare 25 mins | Serves 4

Warmer weather brings memories of sun, seafood and barbeques - so why not combine them all? This recipe from Jamie Oliver puts a yummy twist on the good ol' shrimp. The bay salt flavour is unconventional but that's what makes this BBQ prawn recipe taste so delicious.

Recipe from jamieoliver.com/recipes

Ingredients:

20 raw king prawns, from sustainable sources (ask your fishmonger), peeled and black veins removed

4 small courgettes

10 bay leaves

1 tablespoon sea salt

3 tablespoons good extra virgin olive oil

Juice of ½ lemon

2 large handfuls freshly podded peas

2 large handfuls freshly podded broad beans

1 small bunch fresh mint, leaves picked\

A few chive flowers, optional

Sea salt

Freshly ground black pepper

Directions

1. First of all, get your barbecue good and hot. If you're using wooden skewers, soak four of them in some cold water for 10 minutes, so they don't burn when you put them on the barbie later. Thread 5 prawns on to each skewer, make sure you poke through the fat and the thin part of each prawn. Slice the courgettes into ribbons with a speed peeler or a mandolin.

2. To make the bay salt, crumble the bay leaves into a pestle and mortar and add the salt. Bash up the bay leaves until you have a vibrant green salt and all the bay leaves have broken down and released their natural oils.

3. Sprinkle each of the prawn kebabs with a good pinch of the bay salt. Drizzle them with a little olive oil and pat and rub everything in. Place the skewers on the hot barbecue for a couple of minutes on each side. Fill the rest of the barbecue with the courgette slices – as they are so thin, they'll only need cooking on one side. After 2 minutes, turn over the skewers and cook for a further 2 minutes while you start taking off the courgettes.

4. Pour 3 tablespoons of good olive oil into a large bowl. Squeeze in the lemon juice and add the peas, broad beans and grilled courgettes. Tear over the mint leaves and the chive flowers, if using. Season with a little salt and pepper and gently mix everything together.

5. Serve the vegetables in a big bowl in the middle of the table with the skewers on a wooden board next to it. Perfect light, healthy summer eating.

Tips

Jamie says: The combination of bay leaves and prawns is quite an unconventional one, but I think it's a winner. This recipe will make enough for a decent batch of bay salt – you can use it instead of normal salt. You won't need as much as you would normally use though, as the bay gives it extra flavour. Bay salt is great if sprinkled over a shoulder of lamb, a chicken or a piece of pork before roasting. You can keep it in a container for a couple of months if you dry it out first.

Republished with permission of Wyza.com.au.

“Man-eater:” The man who almost ruined Princess Diana’s reputation

Our beloved Princess Diana had a life that was far from perfect. Afterall, if you were to strip back her beaming smile, elegant clothing and gleaming facade of happiness, the royal was dealing with a crumbling marriage, a world of criticism on her shoulders from the media and the world, and an uncertain future in Britain’s most famous family.

However, there were reports that there was one thing – other than her beautiful boys, Prince William and Prince Harry – who brought her comfort and joy, and this was art dealer Oliver Hoare.

The dashing, married tycoon was a close pal to both Prince Charles and his wife at the time, Princess Diana, in the early '90s – years before a royal divorce would be announced and fill the tabloids around the world.

Prince Charles and Princess Diana with Oliver Hoare and his wife Diane behind at Royal Ascot horserace meeting, June 1986.

Formal protection officer Ken Wharfe wrote in his book, Diana: Closely Guarded Secret, that the princess was “instantly” attracted to Oliver.

“Diana later confessed to me that she had felt a little shy when, at Windsor [in 1992], she shook his hand for the first time, and had blushed as she flirted with him,” Wharfe wrote.

“That conversation ended abruptly when Charles and the Queen Mother joined them.”

Despite the 16-year age difference, Princess Di was said to have become “obsessed” with the married father-of-three.

“She needed him at every conceivable moment,” Wharfe wrote.

“She confided to me that he was the first man who had ever aroused her physically. That admission did much to explain the humiliating events that followed.”

The pair were linked between 1990-1994 and the relationship, according to Chris Dicker in the 2018 book, Princess Diana Biography: The Astonishing Life of the Princess of Wales, was “damaging to Diana’s reputation.”

"Diana's reputation as a man-eater was derived from her affair with Oliver Hoare. He was a married man and this was damaging to Diana's reputation.

"She was convinced he was going to marry her. The press was very aggressive about getting pictures of them.

"Hoare started sneaking into Kensington Palace with his head under a blanket. It was degrading to her.

"Their affair was all over the tabloids. James Hewitt and Oliver Hoare were such rollercoaster romances for her."

Princess Di said in the groundbreaking 1995 Panorama interview, she did indeed call Hoare over a period of six to nine months, however “certainly not in an obsessive manner.”

Reports also said the royal was convinced they were going to be married and “daydreamed of living in Italy with the handsome Hoare.”

Their relationship came to an end when Hoare’s wife complained about hundreds of nuisance phone calls.

An investigation revealed the calls could be traced to the royal’s home in Kensington Palace, her mobile phone, Notting Hill and the home of Diana's older sister, Lady Sarah McCorquodale.

Wharfe explained he was forced to tell Scotland Yard who was making the numerous phone calls.

"I was asked to speak to a senior officer of mine who said to me, 'Somebody is using the princess’s telephone to make phone calls to Oliver Hoare’s household and even spoken to his wife.'

"At that point I said to him, 'The Princess of Wales is having a relationship with this man and that she is making telephone calls'."

While this relationship is widely believed and a number of close companions of the late Princess Di confirm a number of details, the world will never be able to know with absolute certainty.

To the day he died, in August 23, 2018, Oliver Hoare refused to speak about the alleged affair he had with the most famous woman in the world.

Jamie Oliver's restaurant chain collapses leaving 1,000 people jobless

Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver has been “deeply saddened” after his British restaurant chain collapsed into administration, leaving more than 1,000 people out of work.

The Jamie’s Italian Limited firm – which includes 23 Jamie’s Italian restaurants and 15 Barbecoa outlets – confirmed that it had gone into administration and appointed financial firm KPMG to oversee the process.

“I am deeply saddened by this outcome and would like to thank all of the staff and our suppliers who have put their hearts and souls into this business for over a decade,” the 43-year-old said in a statement.

I’m devastated that our much-loved UK restaurants have gone into administration. And we did exactly that.”

His restaurant chain had been in trouble for at least two years, despite the celebrity chef’s fame with his cookbooks, TV shows and public health initiatives. Last year, it closed 12 of its 37 branches in Britain, while five of its Australian arms were sold off and another put into administration.

Oliver said he had spent £13 million of his own money to save the business from bankruptcy.

“We had simply run out of cash,” he said in an interview with the Financial Times in October.

“I think that the senior management we had in place were trying to manage what they would call the perfect storm: rents, rates, the high street declining, food costs, Brexit, increase in the minimum wage. There was a lot going on.”

“It gave people fodder”: The impact of Jamie Oliver's fall from grace

Within the past few years, Jamie Oliver has faced some of the biggest challenges of his career.

Since his first appearance on The Naked Chef in 1999, the celebrity chef had gone on to achieve success through numerous hit television shows, cookbooks, charities and health campaigns. However, the 43-year-old is now dealing with a troubled business empire and a series of controversies that has reportedly turned fans away.

Public relations expert Catriona Pollard said Oliver’s downfall was caused by blunders such as overexposure, actions that do not match his personal brand, and failure to address public criticisms.

Oliver’s image as a healthy everyday cook does not hold up with his actions, Pollard told news.com.au.

Oliver was well-known for his easy, budget-friendly recipes, as shown in the television show Jamie’s Money Saving Meals. However, his eateries are priced on a premium. For example, the Australian branches of Jamie’s Italian restaurant chain ask $20 for a one-course lunch.

Last year, Oliver said the chain had “run out of cash” and closed 12 of the restaurants in Britain.

“You can buy one of his books for $20, or watch his TV show for free,” said Pollard. “But a lot of his restaurants sold expensive meals … which didn’t really stack up for people.”

Pollard said linking his name to the restaurants was a mistake, as their failures would be connected to his personal reputation.

Oliver is also a proud advocate of healthy foods and sustainability as the UN Environment’s environmental champion. The public was quick to accuse Oliver of hypocrisy after the chef signed a £5 million (AU$9 million) deal with petrol giant Shell, which is one of the top 10 greenhouse gas-producing companies in the world.

“Jamie Oliver has a very distinct personal brand linked to very distinctive values,” said Pollard.

“He’s so outspoken when it comes to things like healthy eating and the environmental impacts of climate change, which is great, but … the deal with Shell was seen as negatively straying from that very distinct brand.

“It gave people fodder and they started to change their opinions of him. That backlash was caused because people thought he wasn’t behaving the way they thought he should.”

On Monday, the chef was also revealed to have been an informal advisor to McDonald’s for years, despite having dubbed their burgers as “not fit for human consumption” in 2011.

Pollard also noted Oliver’s media gaffes as one of the reasons the public is turning away from the Brit. While Oliver said nothing on the Shell deal, he revealed the royal family’s rejection to his offer to cater for Prince Harry’s wedding.

“He absolutely should have kept quiet at a time when people were already questioning his reputation — it was not a very sensible thing to do, to say he was snubbed by one of the most watched marriages in recent history,” she said.

“It made people think [the royals] didn’t want to be associated with him, which was a misstep.”

Pollard said it is not too late for Oliver to address these problems. “He’s absolutely not down and out — but he needs to think twice before saying something in future … and look back at what made him great in the first place, and make sure he stays aligned to those values people were attracted to.”
